Why Lemon Water Should Be Your New Morning Ritual

Many of my long-time clients know that I’ve always been a believer in drinking a big glass of water first thing in the morning to enhance the body's natural elimination cycle. For over 20 years…Off and then back on, I would add lemon because I knew it had powerful benefits.

Many doctors teach that adding lemon to your water each morning enables your liver to function more efficiently. When we cleanse first, we allow healing and strength to follow! Now each morning, it is just a habit that I rarely skip.

The key to making it work like magic is to wait 30 minutes before eating or drinking anything. If you want to really detox that liver, consider drinking 16-24 oz of plain fresh celery juice after you wait 30 min! BAM! That really cleans you out! I didn’t even mean to, but I lost 3 pounds the first month I started. I learned everything about celery juice from Anthony William. Many others support this, but the true test is my own personal experience. I’ve felt better, and I've been doing it for four years now!

If that feels like too much, then it is. There will be another time and another season.

Lemon juice is an excellent practice for liver care, and you should start it today!

Benefits of Lemon Water:

  • Supports Detoxification: Lemon water helps remove toxic heavy metals from your system more easily.

  • Fights Disease: The antioxidant flavonoids in lemons and limes help combat disease and may even prevent the growth of some cancers due to their alkalizing effects.

  • Reduces Mucus: Lemon water helps expel mucus, which is often produced by dairy products. Excess mucus can clog the liver and impact its function.

  • Eliminates Toxins: Lemon water assists in flushing out synthetic chemicals, plastics, and poor food choices from your system each morning.

P.S. The good news is that limes work too!

Have Digestion Issues?

Welcome to a very popular club! Most people today experience digestive issues like heartburn and bloating. In fact, over 20% of Americans take some form of acid blocker or neutralizer to manage acid reflux. But long-term, we need stomach acid to break down food into a form that our cells can absorb.

Contrary to popular belief, indigestion is not caused by too much stomach acid—it’s actually caused by too little!

Think I’m crazy? Let’s get a little science-y…

When we eat, our stomach secretes digestive acid and enzymes until it reaches a pH of about 1 or 2—a highly acidic environment necessary to break down food, protein, vitamins, and minerals. Once digestion reaches this acidity level, the small intestine opens to absorb nutrients and move the process along.

But what happens when your stomach doesn’t get acidic enough?

  • Food stays in the stomach longer than it should.

  • It begins to ferment and produce gas.

  • That gas bubbles up, causing acid reflux and heartburn.

  • The stomach is designed to handle acid, but the esophagus is not—so it burns!

Many people take acid neutralizers to relieve the burning, but this only makes the stomach less acidic, making digestion worse over time. Short-term relief, long-term problem.

Ready for REAL Healing?

We need to increase stomach acidity so food digests fully.
Start with lemon water! It stimulates stomach acid production, helping digestion work smoothly.

Even sipping lemon water with your meals can help your insulin levels and reduce glucose spikes. Lemon is truly my favorite fruit!

(But, here is a random side note: if there is an option between a lemon bar or a chocolate chip cookie, I am picking the chocolate every time. I think lemon flavored desserts are about average. Haha- go figure?)

I also love probiotics—they’re one of the fastest ways to improve digestion!

Bonus Tip: Mint tea is another great digestive aid. Peppermint has muscle relaxant properties that improve bile flow, making digestion more efficient. I include mint tea in my nightly routine to reduce bloating and just improve overall digestion!

When Should You Drink Lemon Water?

Lemon water works best in the morning on an empty stomach because there’s nothing else competing for your liver’s attention. Drink it and wait about 30 minutes before eating or drinking anything else. This gives your body time to flush out toxins and enhance its elimination cycle.

Adding this simple habit to your routine will have massive benefits for your internal health! Plus, imagine how refreshing your fridge will look packed full of lemons! 🍋

Make Your Own Lemon Water

  • 1/2 lemon, juiced (no sweetener)

  • 12–16 oz room temperature or cold water (maybe work your way up to 32 oz one day, but still using half a lemon!)

Pro Tip:
I usually squeeze my lemon juice before bed, add it to my water, and set it on my nightstand so it’s ready to drink when my alarm goes off. Another option is squeezing multiple lemons and storing the juice in a glass jar in the fridge. When ready, just pour 2–3 tablespoons into your cup for an easy morning routine!

If you don’t already do this, TRY IT! It’s a simple and effective way to cleanse your body!

Frequently Asked Questions

Is lemon water bad for your teeth?

Contrary to popular belief, lemons are highly mineralizing and loaded with calcium. Fresh lemon juice actually kills bad bacteria in your mouth that contribute to tooth decay!

Are there more benefits to using ½ or a whole lemon?

Not necessarily. Honestly, if they are the big Costco lemons, you could even use a ¼! I’ve tested out using a whole and a half lemon and I did not notice much of a difference but sometimes we seeing a half lemon sitting on the counter waiting for us, so I totally understand juicing the whole thing. You could drink ½ in the morning, and then sip on the rest throughout the day!

Does lemon water help with weight loss?

Lemon water isn't a magic weight-loss drink, but it can support weight loss efforts. It helps by boosting hydration, which is essential for metabolism, aiding digestion, preventing bloating and sluggishness and reducing cravings by keeping you feeling refreshed and satisfied. For best results, remember to pair it with a balanced diet and regular movement.

Final Thought- Lemon water is an easy, natural way to support digestion, detoxification, and overall health. It’s a small daily habit with big long-term benefits.
